In 2010, the customer journey of a client searching for a wedding planner was relatively simple: they searched on Google, visited a few websites, asked friends and family for references, scheduled some appointments. Three or four steps, all fairly linear.

In 2026, that customer journey is fragmented across six or seven different platforms, with completely different discovery logics for every generation of clients. And the map changes every year.

This article is the practical manual for navigating this complexity — for understanding not only where clients of different generations are found, but how to build a presence that intercepts them at the right moment and in the right format.

The Starting Point: The Distinction Between Active Search and Passive Discovery

The most important transformation of recent years isn't the emergence of new platforms — it's the change in the fundamental mechanism by which clients find suppliers.

Active search — "I go on Google and search" — is still dominant for older generations. But for younger Millennials and especially for Gen Z, the main mechanism has become passive discovery: the supplier appears in the feed before the client was even searching. The algorithm anticipates the need, or creates the inspiration that generates the need.

This distinction has enormous implications. In active search, you win by being findable (SEO, Google Business Profile, industry portals). In passive discovery, you win by producing content that the algorithm decides to amplify.

Multi-Channel vs Omnichannel: The Distinction That Matters

Many industry operators are already present on multiple channels: they have a website, an Instagram profile, perhaps a Facebook page. This is multi-channel.

Omnichannel is something different and more ambitious: it's the coherence of the client experience across all touchpoints. The client who discovers the wedding planner on Instagram, then visits the website, then reads reviews on Google, then sends an email — must live a coherent experience in terms of tone, aesthetic, values, and expectations.

Multi-channel is having presence. Omnichannel is integrating that presence into a fluid experience. The first is the starting point. The second is the competitive advantage.

The Operational Map by Channel

Google and SEO

Still the dominant channel for Baby Boomers and Gen X, and relevant for all generations for specific searches. Positioning keys: a website with quality content, Google Business Profile updated and with reviews, presence on authoritative industry portals.

Instagram

The visual channel par excellence. Fundamental for all generations from Millennials onward. The feed tells the aesthetic and identity — must be curated, coherent, recognizable. Stories and Reels tell the process and behind-the-scenes — must be authentic and human. The growing weight of Reels requires short, engaging video content.

Pinterest

Often underestimated, Pinterest is a discovery and inspiration platform with a very different mechanism from Instagram: content remains relevant for months or years, it doesn't disappear after 24 hours. For the wedding and events sector, where inspiration is gathered for a long time before the decision, Pinterest is a highly effective organic acquisition channel over a long time horizon.

YouTube

Fundamental for in-depth content — venue tours, wedding stories, professional interviews. YouTube content is consumed with intention: someone watching a 10-minute video on a Tuscan venue is a highly qualified potential client. Higher production cost, but proportionally high conversion value.

TikTok

Gen Z's channel and the most democratic algorithms — even small accounts can reach large audiences if content works. Requires authenticity, spontaneity, vertical format. Not the channel for the polished portfolio — it's the channel for behind-the-scenes, unexpected moments, the professional's personality.

LinkedIn

Often neglected in the events sector, LinkedIn is the essential channel for reaching corporate decision-makers in the corporate events segment, building professional credibility, and developing relationships with international intermediaries (luxury travel advisors, family offices, concierges).

Building Presence: Where to Start

The temptation is to be everywhere immediately. This strategy usually produces mediocre presence on all channels rather than excellent presence on a few.

The practical recommendation: identify the two or three channels where the majority of your client target concentrates and build excellent presence on those. Only after, expand.

For a wedding planner with premium international clientele: Google (SEO + GBP) + Instagram. For a corporate supplier: Google + LinkedIn. For a venue wanting to attract Gen Z and Millennial clientele: Instagram + Pinterest + TikTok.

The guiding principle isn't presence — it's coherence. Better three well-managed channels with a thoughtfully designed customer journey than seven poorly managed channels with no shared touchpoints.
