Three things we learned from the WIM Insights webinar with Eleonora Tucci of Weddings and Honeymoons Magazine. (There are many more.)

There are things we take for granted. The British wedding market in Italy — 60-75 thousand couples a year looking beyond their borders, with Italy still holding top spot among chosen destinations today — is one of them. "They've always come, they'll always come." Reassuring, and half-true.

The whole truth is more interesting. They literally invented the Italian destination wedding. In the post-WWII period, with the Marshall Plan, many British families invested in holiday homes in Tuscany. In the 1980s, British magazines talked about "Chianti Shire" as a true cultural appendage of the United Kingdom. The kids who grew up in those homes returned, once they reached the right age, to get married there. And they brought their friends to stay for three days. The multi-day format that we know today as the market standard was born right there, in that small cultural movement, half a century ago.

Eleonora Tucci, editorial director of Weddings and Honeymoons Magazine — the benchmark British publication for destination weddings, distributed in major UK supermarkets and internationally — was our guest for the September webinar. She provided a clear breakdown of how this market has changed, what it is looking for today, and where we are losing ground compared to competing destinations.

There are numerous key insights. We share three of them here. The rest can be found, in full, within the WIM community.

First takeaway: competition is no longer between Italian locations

When a British couple chooses a villa in Tuscany, they are not comparing it with other villas in the area. They are comparing it with a venue in Santorini, a hacienda in Andalusia, or a palace in Sintra. Spain, Greece, and Portugal have grown significantly in recent years: same quality, comparable climate, lower prices. Italy maintains first place for perceived beauty and prestige, but the gap has narrowed. And on a three-day event for 60 guests with an average budget of around 115,000 euros — which today defines the British upper-mid market — in some premium Italian destinations, the math simply no longer adds up.

Second takeaway: ChatGPT's English is no longer enough

This is the counterintuitive part. It seems like a trivial point — "you need to know English" — but it isn't at all. AI has raised the bar, not lowered it. Those who use it poorly produce worse results than before: literally translated texts, lacking appropriate register, lacking destination culture. Recognizable in two sentences. Those who use it well — rewriting, not translating, using structured prompts and native-speaker editing — produce results indistinguishable from a professional. The gap between those who successfully enter the British market and those who don't hinges on exactly this.

The analogy worth remembering: think about when you go abroad and read on a menu "spagetti carbonara with cream", "linguini alla vongolla", "pizza margarita". You skip that restaurant. A British couple feels the exact same way reading your poorly translated website. It's not an aesthetic detail. It is the primary signal of how much you respect your client.

Third takeaway: British couples don't know Italy as well as we think

They know they want "Tuscany", but often they mean Florence. They ask for "Lake Como", but their budget would lead them toward Lake Maggiore or Lake Garda — which they don't distinguish between. They mention the Amalfi Coast, but their vision fits perfectly with Cilento or Puglia as well. Those who know how to guide reposition the client and win the deal. Those who simply answer the literal question lose the client over a budget that doesn't hold up.

It's the opposite of what we think. It isn't a weakness of the British couple: it's an opportunity for vendors who know how to act as consultants. And it is probably the most underrated lever in the UK market today.

Everything else

In the webinar, Eleonora also covered: why a British wedding consists of three events rather than one (the history of Chianti Shire); how discovery channels shift between Instagram, Pinterest, and TikTok for Gen Z; why email is the primary communication channel instead of WhatsApp (unlike in Arab and Indian markets); how pricing transparency is built into a British contract; why "less is more" regarding food is a cultural requirement rather than a stylistic choice; how to get real weddings published in British magazines; the most common mistakes made by Italian vendors who lose UK clients; and why the travel component — post-event mini-moons, extended guest stays — is one of the most underrated commercial long tails in our market.

The full webinar, the complete in-depth article, the operational checklist, and the three core marketing pillar articles serving as the theoretical framework (Concepts, Tools, Process) are available on WIMforPRO, in the Insights Plus section reserved for Silver and Gold network members.

The next webinar on international markets is scheduled for Wednesday, September 15, dedicated to European markets with Valentina Moneglia. The following session, covering the Russian-speaking market with Victoria Kursova, will close out the series. And we will all meet up at WIM Event 2026, from November 18 to 20 in Florence, where Eleonora will join us from London along with many other international partners in the network. The full schedule is available at wimforevents.com.

The market that invented us still chooses us. It's up to us to earn it.
