Three things we learned from the WIM Insights webinar with Valentina Moneglia on European markets. (There are many more.)
There's a convenient way of thinking about the foreign client choosing Italy for their wedding. It goes something like this: "seeking the magic of Italy, the Italian dream, the once-in-a-lifetime experience." It's a fond, romantic narrative, and in many cases a true one. But only for part of the market.
For another slice — a large one, worth a third of the Italian destination wedding market — the narrative is completely different. This client has nothing to discover. They've already been to Italy several times. They have friends who live there. They might even have relatives there. They may have a family home somewhere in Italy, or at least a friend who knows a guy, and so on! They can drive there in two or three hours. It's not Tuscany that has to win them over — they already know Tuscany. What they're looking for is something harder: a new way of experiencing it.
Valentina Moneglia, a senior consultant with over 25 years of experience in strategic development for events, destination wedding, and hospitality companies — and one of the earliest Wimmers in the network — was our guest at September's webinar dedicated to "Continental Europe": Germany, Switzerland, France, the Netherlands. She brought a clear-eyed reading of how this market actually works, and of where our Italian industry is losing opportunities because it hasn't yet learned to read it.
There's plenty of evidence. We'll share three pieces here. The rest can be found in full inside the WIM community.
First finding: the closest market is worth a third of the total (and no one talks about it)
Data from the Destination Wedding in Italy Observatory shows that 51.9% of the international market for Italian destination weddings comes from Europe. Excluding the UK (20.7%, covered separately in last week's webinar), Continental Europe accounts for 31.2% of the international market. Four countries — Germany, Switzerland, France, the Netherlands — together make up 21.4% of the total. Germany alone sends over a thousand couples a year to marry in Italy. These are significant numbers, not a minor share.
And yet these are the markets that our industry treats with the least strategic attention of all. The paradox of the neighbor: we're so convinced we know them that we stop studying them.
Second finding: the European multi-day wedding isn't the American one (and whoever doesn't know that loses clients)
For the American or Gulf couple, an Italian destination wedding is a three-, five-, sometimes seven-day affair. Welcome, rehearsal, main event, farewell, activities for guests around the region, often with an exclusive resort buyout. The model we all know, one the industry has built over ten years of working with those markets.
The European couple is different. Two days is already common — welcome plus main event, and not always even the welcome. They rarely ask for a buyout. They don't necessarily want a full package. Guests arrange their own travel and accommodation. The reason is simple: someone flying in two hours from Zurich, Frankfurt, or Paris isn't going to stay in Italy for a week. They come for the wedding and leave.
Anyone who sells the European client the Anglo-Saxon model — three-day, all-inclusive package, buyout — is implicitly signaling that they haven't understood the market. And the European client picks up on that from the very first email.
Third finding: the Swiss middle class is, for your market, a premium client
Switzerland has five million inhabitants and accounts for 7.2% of the Italian destination wedding market. That proportion, relative to population, is the highest in Europe. For the Swiss, Italy is the world's number one destination for an international wedding.
And there's a figure worth remembering. A newly graduated Swiss engineer looks for salaries starting at 7,000–8,000 francs a month. A middle-class employee in Zurich or Geneva has a spending capacity that, in other European countries, would be reserved for the upper bracket. The Swiss franc is stronger than the euro, often trading above parity. Swiss families traditionally have high liquidity. It's not the largest market in volume, but it's probably the one with the highest density of genuinely qualified clients for our industry.
Two hours by car from Milan. How many of us today treat it as a strategic priority?
Everything else
In the webinar, Valentina also spoke about: why the Italian-European mixed wedding is a market without real numbers yet, but one much more real than commonly reported (with the mozzarella anecdote that's worth a thousand strategies); how the German client (bottled beer, not draft) differs from the French client (two specific religious components to be aware of) and from the Dutch client (informality that doesn't mean less attention); why an Italian contract translated into English via ChatGPT doesn't work; why in 2027 SEO becomes GEO and Google becomes Gemini; why generalist advertising doesn't capture clients but consolidates positioning; and why none of these four markets should be pursued before asking whether your own company is ready to serve it.
The full webinar, the in-depth article, the operational checklist, and the three pillar marketing articles that form the theoretical framework (Concepts, Tools, Process) are available on WIMforPRO, in the Insights Plus section, reserved for Silver and Gold network members.
The next installment of the international markets webinar series is at the end of September, dedicated to the Russian-speaking market with Victoria Kursova (Palazzo Eventi). It closes out the series of six international markets. To take part, just be a WIMforPRO member. And we'll all meet again at WIM Event 2026, November 18–20 in Florence — Teatro della Pergola, Palazzo Corsini, Villa Corsini, Giardini Corsini on Via della Scala. The full program is at wimforevents.com.
Now we know how to talk to European clients. It's up to us to do it.
