Let's start with a simple question. How much is the private events industry worth in Italy?
If the answer in your head is "a lot, but I don't know exactly how much," you're in good company. Until today, no one knew with precision. There were no systematic data. There was no observatory. There wasn't even a shared definition of what, exactly, the "private events industry" was.
With WIM Insights 2026 — the first systematic Observatory on the Italian Private Events Industry, developed with the scientific support of the University of Siena on a sample of 617 companies — this changes.
The declarative estimates from the WIMSurvey25 sample indicate an overall economic impact estimated at €18 to €20 billion per year. It's a large number. Perhaps larger than many expected.
But the data point that deserves to be read with even more attention isn't this. It's the territorial multiplier: for every euro of direct spending generated by a private event, the territory receives between €2.20 and €2.50 of overall economic value. Direct, indirect, induced.
This means that an €80,000 wedding — the cost for the couple — generates in the local economy a real impact between €176,000 and €200,000. Guests staying in nearby hotels, transportation, florists, bakeries, neighborhood restaurants, local guides, artisans. An economy that activates around a single event and stays in the territory, capillary-distributed across local SMEs.
If this industry is worth so much, why wasn't it visible?
The answer is structural. The private events sector doesn't coincide with any single productive category in Italian statistics. It cuts across more than 55 ATECO codes — from food service to photography studios, from historic estates to entertainment agencies, from rental services to wedding planning. This means that in the official classifications of ISTAT, Unioncamere, and the Ministry of Tourism, private events don't appear as a category. They get fragmented into dozens of headings, each representing a fraction of the whole.
The practical result: the industry didn't see itself as a system. It couldn't be institutionally represented. It couldn't access targeted public policies. It couldn't negotiate with banks as a structured sector. It couldn't bring a defensible number to the political table.
"In a sector composed largely of micro and small enterprises, producing shared knowledge means strengthening the capacity for collective development and institutional representation." — University of Siena
There's another element of invisibility, perhaps even deeper. The industry's players — organizers, venues, service suppliers — often didn't perceive themselves as part of a single supply chain. A wedding planner saw themselves as a creative professional, not as a link in an €18 billion economic system. A historic estate saw itself as a tourism resource, not as a component of a supply chain that generates qualified employment and territorial development.
The WIMSurvey25 — with its 617 respondents from 617 different companies, varied by type, region, and specialization — is the first systematic attempt to make the industry look at itself in the mirror in its entirety. To say: this is who you are. This is how you're built. This is what you're worth.
The availability of structured data isn't only an academic fact. It has very concrete implications.
The first is institutional representation. With a defensible number — €18-20 billion in economic impact, 50,000 companies, 55 ATECO codes — it becomes possible to bring the industry to the political table. Visas for international clients, accessibility of historic venues, professional training, de-seasonalization policies: these are battles that can only be fought with data in hand.
The second is credibility with international intermediaries. A London family office, a New York luxury planner, a luxury agency concierge in Dubai — when they choose where to send their clients, they choose documented and credible systems. An industry that doesn't measure itself is an industry that doesn't sell itself.
The third is the strategic awareness of the operators themselves. Knowing you're part of an €18-20 billion sector changes the way you negotiate, the way you communicate your value, the way you decide where to invest.
The WIMSurvey25 is a first step, not a destination. The sample of 617 companies — significant as it is — represents about 1.2% of the more than 50,000 companies estimated in the sector. The selection methodology implies an over-representation of Tuscany and of operators already integrated into structured professional circuits.
The real objective, declared by the University of Siena in the report, is to build over time a systematic observatory with updatable methodology, a broader sample, and longitudinal comparability. An observatory that every year returns to the industry an increasingly precise picture of itself.
This is exactly what WIM Insights intends to build. Year after year.
