When Italy is discussed as a destination for luxury private events, the conversation tends to polarize into two opposite narratives: the enthusiastic ("we're unique in the world") and the pessimistic ("bureaucracy is killing us"). WIM Insights 2026 seeks to build a third narrative — more precise, more useful, more honest.
Let's start with the data. Not from national pride — from data.
Italy boasts five regions in the world's top 25 for destination private events — more than any other nation in the world. Rome ranks 9th globally for international meetings. Milan ranks 3rd globally for average event attendance — 803 people. The Amalfi Coast ranks first in the world for destination weddings.
In 2025, over 15,000 foreign weddings were celebrated in Italy. The direct economic impact alone — calculated on a limited basket of goods and services, excluding guest hospitality and transportation — exceeds one billion euros.
To these is added the advantage the Observatory defines as a "structural unfair advantage": the heritage of venues. Italy has a density of historic, architectural, and scenic venues that no competitor in the world can build from scratch. Noble villas, historic estates, castles, agricultural courtyards, monumental gardens, ancient villages, convents — distributed capillarily across the entire territory. It's an advantage built over centuries and not replicable.
And finally, there's "Brand Italy": the symbolic value built over centuries in the imagination of global affluent classes. "Italy" is a mental shortcut for excellence, authenticity, style. It's an intangible asset of extraordinary value.
But here the celebratory part must end. Because symbolic advantage doesn't automatically translate into structural advantage. And three systemic vulnerabilities concretely threaten Italian competitiveness in the global HNWI market.
The first vulnerability: infrastructure and accessibility. HNWI clients from strategic markets like India, China, and the Gulf countries — rapidly growing markets with HNWIs in strong expansion — encounter concrete obstacles in accessing Italy. Schengen visa issuance processes are complex, slow, and unpredictable for citizens of these countries. Logistical infrastructure in more peripheral destinations isn't always up to the expectations of UHNW clientele.
Compare this with Dubai, which has built in thirty years a hospitality system for international luxury clientele that is simply more efficient. It doesn't have the Colosseum. It doesn't have Chianti. But it has a systemic efficiency Italy doesn't yet have.
The second vulnerability: supply chain fragmentation. The Italian private events sector is composed of more than 50,000 companies, predominantly small and medium-sized, that don't recognize themselves as a system. There are no shared standards. There's no structured coordination. There's no unified voice toward institutions and toward international intermediaries.
The consequences are concrete. A London family office wanting to organize an event for an HNWI client in Italy finds itself facing a fragmented and difficult-to-navigate ecosystem. In Spain, in France, in Portugal — competitor destinations — the system is more structured. Not necessarily better in the quality of the final product, but easier to purchase. And ease of purchase is a real competitive factor.
The third vulnerability: the lack of structured data. The sector doesn't measure itself systematically. And this has consequences that go far beyond the academic question. Without data, you can't build institutional representation. You can't negotiate targeted public policies. You can't credibly communicate the sector's value to international investors or global media.
The WIMSurvey25 is the first step toward solving this vulnerability. But it's only a first step.
Italy finds itself in a paradoxical situation: it's the world's most desired destination for certain types of private events, but it doesn't have a system that helps that demand transform into economic value efficiently captured.
A concrete example: the growth of Indian HNWIs is extraordinary. India is the world's fourth country by number of millionaires. The multi-day Indian wedding has a typical budget between €200,000 and €500,000. And 46.5% of Indian HNWIs declare they prefer luxury experiences over material goods.
Italy is a destination of great appeal for affluent Indian clients. But how many Italian operators have a service profile translated into English that accounts for this clientele's specific needs? How many know the rituals of Sikh or Hindu weddings? How many have visited a luxury fair in Mumbai? The answer, in the vast majority of cases, is: very few.
Three levers allow transforming symbolic advantage into structural advantage.
The Italian competitive advantage is real. It isn't automatic. The distance between the two is exactly the distance the industry is called to travel.
