There's an economic phenomenon of historic scale underway that most people — even in the financial sector — haven't fully metabolized yet. And it has direct, concrete, measurable implications for those working in the private events industry.

It's called the Great Wealth Transfer. According to Cerulli Associates (2025), the most authoritative independent think tank on American wealth management, it concerns approximately $124 trillion that will change hands in the USA by 2048. Globally, Capgemini estimates a transfer of $83.5 trillion in the same period.

For scale: USA GDP is approximately $27 trillion per year. We're talking about a wealth transfer equal to nearly five years of economic output of the world's largest economy.

Who Gives and Who Receives

The transfer occurs from older generations — primarily Baby Boomers and the Silent Generation — toward their children and grandchildren: Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z.

Cerulli Associates estimates the distribution by beneficiary generation: Gen X will receive approximately $39 trillion, primarily in the next decade. Millennials will receive approximately $46 trillion, with the peak around 2035-2045. Gen Z will receive approximately $15 trillion, with a 20-25 year horizon.

Timing is crucial for industry operators: by 2030, 30% of HNWIs will have received a significant inheritance. By 2035, 63%. The acceleration is already underway.

The Transfer Isn't Just Money: It's Priorities

The point many analysts emphasize — and that's most relevant for the private events industry — is that the Great Wealth Transfer isn't just a transfer of capital. It's a transfer of priorities, values, and consumption behaviors.

Baby Boomers who hold most global wealth today built their relationship with luxury primarily through material goods: houses, cars, jewelry, art. Luxury as possession and as visible status.

Millennials and Gen X who will inherit this wealth have a structurally different relationship with luxury. Knight Frank documents that nearly half of HNWIs under 35 would prefer to invest a windfall in experiences rather than material goods. Capgemini finds that 61% of Millennial and Gen Z HNWIs allocate 15% of their portfolio to alternative investments, including luxury experiences.

This isn't a passing trend — it's a structural generational difference that translates into a permanent increase in demand for high-value private events.

The Impact on the Events Market: The Concrete Numbers

How does the Great Wealth Transfer translate into concrete demand for private events?

The reasoning is the following: every heir who receives a significant inheritance — say, between $5 and $30 million — becomes with high probability an active client of the luxury private events market within 5-10 years of receiving the inheritance. Wedding (if young), family celebrations, anniversaries, business events (if entrepreneur).

Multiplying the number of expected heirs in the next 10-20 years by a conservative estimate of event spending — even just 1-2 high-value events per decade — yields an additional market of extraordinary dimensions.

The WIM Insights Observatory estimates a current global HNWI private events market between €205 and €320 billion per year. Projections to 2035 — accounting for both the Great Wealth Transfer and HNWI population growth — indicate a market between €350 and €540 billion, in scenarios from prudent to optimistic.

How to Position Yourself in Advance

The Great Wealth Transfer poses a very precise challenge to industry operators: how to intercept new HNWIs — those receiving the inheritance now and those who will receive it in the next 10-20 years — before they choose their reference suppliers?

The answer passes through three directions. The first is building relationships with intermediaries who work with new HNWIs: wealth managers, family offices, luxury travel advisors. They are the first points of contact with the heir receiving an important patrimony.

The second is developing presence in media and platforms frequented by emerging Millennial HNWIs: premium lifestyle media, luxury travel platforms, communities of entrepreneurs who become wealthy relatively young.

The third — and most fundamental — is being structured as a system, not as an isolated excellence. The Great Wealth Transfer will produce demand that the Italian private events system can satisfy only if organized in a coordinated way.
