One of the problems of the Italian private events industry is that it often operates without a clear vision of the international demand market. We know foreign clients exist. We know they come mainly from the USA and UK. But the systematic mapping of who they are, how many they are, where they live, what they want, and how their wealth is evolving — that systematic mapping wasn't there.

The HNWI analysis from the WIM Insights 2026 report builds it, for the first time, rigorously. And the results are more relevant than many expected.

Who HNWIs Are: The Definition That Counts

HNWI stands for High Net Worth Individual — individual with high net worth. The standard definition, adopted by Capgemini, UBS, and Knight Frank — the three main international sources of private wealth data — is precise: an individual with investable assets equal to or above $1 million USD, excluding primary residence.

This threshold isn't arbitrary. It represents the point above which an individual has significant discretionary spending capacity — the ability to allocate resources toward non-essential experiences and consumption without compromising economic stability. It's the threshold above which a private event for €50,000, €100,000, or €200,000 becomes an ordinary purchase, not exceptional.

How Many They Are and Where They Are

According to the Capgemini World Wealth Report 2025, the global HNWI population reached 23.4 million in 2024. It has nearly tripled compared to the 7-8 million of 2000 — a structural growth driven by capital globalization, technology, and the expansion of financial markets.

Geographic distribution is very precise. North America hosts approximately 8.4 million HNWIs (+7.3% in 2024, driven by stock market performance and AI optimism). Asia-Pacific hosts 7.7 million (structural growth, with India and Japan as main drivers). Europe has 5.7 million (slight decline in 2024, but with the UHNW segment — above $30 million — growing +3.5%). The Middle East has approximately 1 million HNWIs, with extraordinary UHNW concentration.

Italy ranks 9th globally for number of millionaires, with approximately 500-550,000 HNWIs — a significant share of domestic demand often underestimated in operators' commercial planning.

Internal Segmentation: Not All HNWIs Are Equal

The HNWI population is heavily stratified. Capgemini identifies three main segments.

Millionaires Next Door — patrimony $1-5M — represent approximately 90% of HNWIs (21 million people). They are well-off but not exceptionally rich. For the events sector, they are the Aspirational High-End segment: they can afford high-quality events, with typical budgets between €20,000 and €100,000.

Mid-Tier Millionaires — patrimony $5-30M — represent approximately 9% (2.2 million). They are the Core Wealth International Lifestyle segment: premium events with typical budgets between €100,000 and €500,000. They are the highest-growth market in value for the sector.

Ultra HNWIs (UHNW) — patrimony ≥$30M — number approximately 234,000 individuals. The most exclusive segment, with typical event budgets from €500,000 to €5 million or more. This segment recorded the fastest growth in 2024 (+6.2%), driven by extraordinary stock market performance and the fortunes created by the AI economy.

Growth Drivers: Why HNWIs Will Keep Growing

Four structural dynamics sustain the growth of the HNWI population and their propensity to spend on private events.

The first is the globalization of capital: increasingly integrated financial markets have multiplied opportunities for wealth accumulation on an international scale.

The second is technology: the digital economy has created scalable business models that generate wealth at unprecedented speed. Silicon Valley tech billionaires, the new wealth of digital India, Chinese e-commerce entrepreneurs — they are all first-generation HNWIs with very high propensity for experiential spending.

The third is the Great Wealth Transfer: $124 trillion will change hands by 2048, shifting toward generations with structurally higher propensity for experiences.

The fourth is the growth of emerging economies: India and Asia-Pacific will produce 47.5% of new global HNWIs between 2025 and 2028. This is where the most explosive growth potential concentrates.
