"We need to be international" is a goal many private events industry operators state. But stating the goal isn't a strategy. Being everywhere at once — attending every fair, responding to every international lead with equal priority, communicating across every market with equal intensity — isn't sustainable for any SME.

The effective strategy for engaging HNWI markets isn't maximum presence. It's selective, sustained presence. Choosing the right markets, building deep presence in those, and progressively expanding when capacity allows.

The Three-Tier Matrix

The HNWI analysis from the WIM Insights 2026 report proposes a prioritization matrix for international markets across three levels, based on the maturity of demand, market size, and the complexity of investment required to engage them.

Tier 1 — Continuous Presence

Tier 1 markets are those with structured and consolidated demand, well-identified intermediaries, and high conversion capacity within relatively short timeframes. They require continuous investment — not episodic actions.

For the Italian private events industry, the Tier 1 markets are: UK (London in particular), USA (especially New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and other high-density HNWI areas), UAE (Dubai as the decision hub), India (Mumbai and Delhi as the epicenters of urban wealth), Switzerland (Geneva and Zurich as hubs for European family offices).

Continuous presence means: regular attendance at international industry fairs in these markets, active relationships with local luxury planners and wedding planners, presence in reference media, and possible inclusion in luxury travel consortia.

Tier 2 — Periodic Campaigns

Tier 2 markets are those with mature, qualified demand but lower volume than Tier 1. They don't require permanent presence, but periodic campaigns — two or three times a year — that are targeted and well executed.

They include: Northern Europe (Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Germany), Australia and New Zealand (the premium Anglo-Saxon niche), Singapore and Hong Kong (English-speaking APAC hubs), Canada.

Periodic engagement means: geo-targeted social media campaigns in these markets during peak research seasons (typically November-January for the following summer), participation in industry fairs in these markets once a year, and targeted PR in local luxury media.

Tier 3 — Selective Outreach

Tier 3 markets are those with very high growth potential but still in a development phase for the Italian private events industry. They require advance investment — knowing that commercial returns will arrive 2-5 years before the demand peak.

They include: Saudi Arabia (especially Riyadh, alongside Dubai), second-tier India (Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai's affluent suburbs), Shanghai and Beijing for the Chinese luxury segment, Tokyo for the Japanese premium segment.

Selective outreach means: presence at global fairs such as The Wedding Experience or Luxe Pack, relationship building with 5-10 key intermediaries per market (not 50 — 5-10 with whom you can build deep relationships), and PR in international luxury media that reach these markets.

The Investment Logic: Why You Can't Do Everything

The principle behind the matrix isn't exclusionary — it's pragmatic. The resources of a mid-sized company in the events industry are limited. International marketing — travel, fairs, content production, digital campaigns — has a real cost that must be calibrated against expected returns.

Investing 100% of your international resources in the USA and UK (Tier 1 markets with reliable returns but already highly competitive) is a defensive strategy. Allocating a share — even a small one — to outreach in Tier 3 markets like India or the Middle East is a controlled-risk bet with very high return potential in the medium term.

The matrix isn't rigid — it evolves over time. A Tier 3 market today can become Tier 2 in three years and Tier 1 in five, if demand grows as the HNWI data suggests. Those who have invested in early relationships and presence hold a competitive advantage that latecomers will struggle to recover.
